I received my most recent RockAuto order! Nothing too exciting, just parts for my new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

The dogs have to inspect every package that enters the house, for safety

I was surprised how the exhaust parts were shipped. Just a little bubble wrap and a sticker. The below is exactly how fedex handed them to me. One bolts to the exhaust manifold and has the cat, the other is the tailpipe.

Kinja'd!!!

Nothing too exotic in the box, thermostat, seals, rear brake parts (drums, shoes, hose, lines, hardware), couple of sensors. Just general maintenance and new used vehicle stuff.

BTW- anybody interested on a writeup of how to work on rear drum brakes? They’re not difficult once you’ve done them a couple of times but can be intimidating compared to discs.

I’d totally be up for a drum writeup. I HATE drum brakes!

I figured I would offer. The first time I did them it was more swearing than not. I’ve done them about a dozen times since and it’s downright easy now. Still a pain in the ass compared to discs though. Basically anybody with a car more than 15 years old (or an economy car) has rear drums though...

Kinda hard to do a write up on top my head, but get some brake cleaner so you have a clean working environment. Good set of pliers for the springs, or brake spring pliers if you want the right tool for the job. i use a hook to remove/install springs. Push in the shoe hold down springs and turn till the spring and cup thingy come off and remove shoe

Take pictures of where the springs go. Each one is colored and has to go back the same place. best to replace the springs. usually cheap and old ones can loose tension over time.

Also leave the parking brake off. My 1st time it took a while to get the drum off :P

I’ve done them before and have no problem with drum brakes. I was offering to do a write-up for anybody interested in it.

Thanks for the tips though ;)

Please do, I offer to help all my friends with brakes as long as they aren’t drums because i’m pretty sure drums are operated with black magic.

I had the same standing offer for a long time. After I did them once I swore off of them for years.

Drums are really tricky when they’re old. My 62 Willys has 4 wheel drums that are adjusted by 2 cam bolts on the back and will fall out of adjustment when looked at sideways.

With the Ranger upon closer inspection the brake line to the left rear was broken and blocked off and I need to fix the parking brake. Once you tear into drums you might as well replace the whole shebang as it's cheap and barely any more work than opening the drum.

Ha

The Montego has 4 wheel drums but it’s been stopping great the years I’ve had it so I don’t even look at em funny. Like you said, anything could happen. And if it’s stopping great and they aren’t even power brakes? Nothing is going on in there that needs attention.

No problem- happens to the best of us. I'm starting to really dig oppo, everybody seems willing to help. A lot less condescension than many forums.

I assume your montego is the Torino based one? I didn’t expect it to have 4 wheel drums, is it a 6 cylinder model?

Yes, Torino/fairlane based.

It’s a 1968 with a 302 V8 2v (upgraded to a 4 barrel) but it’s actually an up model Montego MX (MX was a higher trim level) with the Cyclone Performance Handling Package. Cyclone package got power steering, a sway bar, and a really cool rare package for my car, thats it.

But yeah 4 wheel drums my man.

Pre-70 explains the 4 wheel drums. F series trucks had 4 wheel drums standard until 73...

Sweet car, sounds like it is a blast!

I started tearing into them this weekend and one side was trashed and needed a couple extra parts. If the weather stays good I’ll get them done this week and a how to with pics posted in the next couple weeks.
